Schlesinger, John

Schlesinger, John
   b. 1926, London
   Film-maker
John Schlesinger began his career as a director in television before moving to feature films. His earliest work seems to typify fashionable 1960s British cinema: the social realism of A Kind of Loving and the superficiality of Billy Liar and Darling. The arresting style and epic qualities of Far From the Madding Crowd (1967) effectively demonstrated wider possibilities. An interest in troubled and complicated human relationships which marked Schlesinger’s British films was given greater resonance in his US movies, including the intense and poignant Midnight Cowboy (1967), and the thrillers Marathon Man (1976), The Falcon and the Snowman (1985) and the less convincing Pacific Heights (1990). In the 1980s and 1990s Schlesinger returned to directing for British television, with An Englishman Abroad and Cold Comfort Farm.
